To facilitate travelling of Bangladesh Citizens abroad, Department of Immigration & Passports started it’s journey as Directorate in 1962 along with Zonal office, Dhaka and Regional Passport Office, Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Khulna. After Liberation war, in the year 1973, Department of Immigration & Passports was established as separate Department. The organogram of DIP has been upgraded in the year 1981, 1998 and in 2001 and the number of offices reached to 17. In 2010, there were dramatic changes took place to keep pace with the developed country in issuing Machine Readable Passport and Machine Readable Visa. Number of offices rose to 33. 6 Visa Cell and 9 Immigration Check post also have been established. In 2011, 33 more regional passport offices were created. At present, manpower of DIP is 1184. Total number of Divisional Passport and Visa office & Regional Passport Office is 67 and Head Office is located in Dhaka. Moreover, implementing MRP & MRV Project in 73 Bangladeshi Mission abroad is ongoing.
Keeping this slogan in front of it "Passport is a citizen's right; Comprehensive service is our commitment" - Department of Immigration and Passport started the operation of Regional Passport Offices in every district to bring passport services to citizens' doorsteps. In continuation of this, Meherpur Regional Passport Office was launched from 2015. Since then Regional Passport Office, Meherpur has been providing passport services to the citizens of the region very efficiently.
